First things first, let's rewind and capture the true essence of how Ringo's Dirty Diner came to be:

Imagine this: My brother Steve and I, Tash, separated by miles but united by a shared love for good food and an unbreakable bond. It was during a time when I was savouring the eclectic flavours of Amsterdam, while Steve found himself navigating the hustle and bustle of the UK job market. His struggle with job instability was a source of frustration and uncertainty for both of us. But amidst the chaos, a spark of inspiration ignited—a flicker of hope that would soon blaze into a roaring fire of entrepreneurship.

The idea was simple yet profound: Why not join forces and start a business together? After all, who better to weather the storm of entrepreneurship than siblings who had each other's backs through thick and thin?

And so, armed with nothing but a shared dream and a whole lot of determination, our journey began. From different countries, Steve and I embarked on a whirlwind adventure of brainstorming sessions, late-night calls, and endless cups of coffee. Each idea was like a puzzle piece, fitting together to form the blueprint of our future.

But it wasn't until one fateful conversation that the pieces truly fell into place. As we swapped stories and reminisced about childhood memories, the idea of a food truck—a mobile oasis of comfort food and nostalgia—began to take shape. It was a revelation, a eureka moment that felt like destiny knocking at our door.

And just like that, Ringo's Dirty Diner was born—a testament to the power of family, friendship, and the unwavering belief that anything is possible when you have each other's backs. From that moment on, there was no looking back as Steve and I dove headfirst into the wild and wonderful world of food truck entrepreneurship.

Research and Planning:

Before we could hit the streets in style, we knew we had to do our homework. So, armed with determination and a healthy appetite for success, we reached out to our competitors, boldly asking the burning question: "How much money do you make?" Okay, maybe we were a tad forward, but hey, fortune favours the bold, right? While some responses remained elusive, we gleaned invaluable insights from others, soaking up advice on everything from kitchen logistics, insurances to buy, EHO rules and regulations to customer engagement and how to break into the events scene. It was here that we realised this community of small street-food vendors in Wales is one of the most open and understanding in the hospitality sector - how lucky we were!

But we didn't stop there. Oh no, we took our sleuthing skills to the streets, scouring local events, kitchens, cafes, and bars for any hint of street food pop-ups. Armed with a phone and an endless supply of caffeine, we embarked on a relentless campaign of cold calls and emails, bombarding potential partners with tantalising glimpses of our culinary prowess. We wanted them to know who we were, what we were about, and why they needed Ringo's Dirty Diner in their lives and at their events.

And you know what? It paid off. After weeks of persistence and persuasion, we landed our first gig in the events scene—a milestone moment that marked the beginning of our food truck journey. Legal and Administrative Tasks:

Okay, okay, we know—legal stuff isn't exactly the sexiest part of launching a food truck empire. But hey, it's all part of the game! Get ready to navigate the bureaucratic jungle by registering your business, snagging those all-important licenses and permits, and crossing your T's and dotting your I's like a pro. Trust us, once you've got all your paperwork in order, you'll be one step closer to living out your culinary dreams.

Navigating the world of food truck entrepreneurship can feel like embarking on a thrilling adventure. With so many moving parts and details to manage, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But fear not! We've got a secret weapon to help you stay organised and on track: the trusty tick-list.

Think of it as your roadmap to success—a handy checklist to ensure you've covered all your bases. Now, keep in mind that not every item on this list may apply to your situation, and that's perfectly okay. Every journey is unique, and it's important to tailor your approach to fit your specific needs.

  1. Public Liability Insurance (PLI):

  • Public Liability Insurance is a must-have for any street food vendor, providing essential protection against potential legal liabilities. Typically, vendors require a minimum of £5 million in coverage, though some event spaces or council organizers may now demand £10 million.

  • This insurance safeguards you in scenarios where accidents occur, such as food poisoning incidents or employee injuries during work. It's an absolute necessity when launching a food business.

  • For our PLI, we opted for Giles Insurance, a reputable provider that offers comprehensive coverage tailored to the unique needs of food truck operators. 2. Third-Party Towing Insurance:

  • When towing a trailer for commercial purposes, it's crucial to have appropriate insurance coverage to protect yourself and your business.

  • One common mistake we made initially was purchasing third-party towing insurance from a well-known provider at an attractive rate. However, we later discovered that this coverage was insufficient for commercial use.

  • To rectify this oversight, we turned to Giles Insurance once again for Third-Party Towing Insurance designed specifically for commercial vehicles. This coverage ensures that both the vehicle and trailer are adequately protected while conducting business operations.

  • It's important to note that this insurance should be registered under your business name, with the driver listed as a Named Driver. Additionally, you can negotiate with your insurer to include allowances for personal use of the vehicle.

  • Without this specialised insurance, you risk being legally uncovered in the event of an accident while towing your trailer for business purposes.

By partnering with trusted insurance providers like Giles Insurance, you can rest assured knowing that your food truck operation is adequately protected against potential risks and liabilities. Remember, investing in comprehensive insurance coverage is a crucial step towards building a secure and resilient business foundation. Lets note here that you should also consider having a breakdown cover that will also rescue your trailer, not just your car. These can be settled alongside your vehicle insurance.
